Japanese Culture Activity for February 2012; Setsubun

On January 28th, although it was a little early, all students of elementary division at LBJLS celebrated “Setsubun”. Setsubun is a ceremony to welcome Spring, to wish to avoid bad luck but to so spend the whole year with happiness. People throw beans out while shouting “Ogre out!” to drive bad luck out, throw into home shouting “Happiness in!” to bring happiness into home.

After the explanation about Setsubun with Power point by Amiya teacher, students made themselves origami boxes to put beans into it. Some students found it difficult to make clean folding lines, so they got help from the teacher’s.

Students got beans from the teacher, threw beans into class room shouting “Happiness in”, and after that, they wore a mask of Ogre (demon). The students ran around, threw beans at the Ogre (role played by students).

On this day, students had a lot of yummy beans, and also had some good exercise by running around the play yard.
